Preheat oven to 350 F. Bring dunkel and dates to a simmer in a medium sized saucepot over low heat. Remove from heat and let steep. Sift flour, salt, powdered ginger and baking soda. Cream butter and sugar until light, then beat in eggs, one at a time, and add vanilla extract. By hand, stir in the beer/dates blend and the flour mixture, stirring the batter well after each addition. Mix in the nuts. Grease a 9x9 baking dish liberally with butter. Scrape batter into pan, and smooth until even. Bake at 350F for 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool before slicing and serving.
